Q: I notice that SoundToVision (SToV) will play something initially well and then over-time its gets slower and starts to stutter. Is there a way to fix this?

A: On some laptops and other computers, the performance of the computer is throttled by the operating system because the CPU (Central Processing Unit) and also the GPU (Graphical Processing Unit) are getting too hot. This means that although the computer is initially capable of maintaining the desired performance, due to the heat, it has to slow-down ('throttle') its computation over-time. This can have an overly deleterious effect on SToV as it tries to maintain the FPS (Frames Per Second) but stutters and will drop-frames against its will as the CPU is no longer performing the necessary computation. Ultimately you will find that high levels of complexity can not be maintained indefinitely, but it is possible to manage this.

  • If performing live, try and keep your computer as cool as possible. Ideally keep it off anything which is warm (like your lap!) and position it on a surface which is cool and well ventilated.
  • In your laptop software it maybe possible to boost performance by closing anything which is taking up resources on your computer. This could be other software, or additional browser tabs that you might have open.
  • The best browser to use in our experience is Chrome browser. This is the browser that performs best with SToV and gives better performance than other leading browsers.
  • Depending on your computer's manufacturer, it may be possible to disable the CPU throttling in the computer's settings, though please attempt this at your own risk. It may also be possible to throttle the CPU yourself so that you can avoid overheating during a performance.
  • Within SToV you can significantly reduce the computational demands of the software by changing the live performance FPS from 60 FPS to 30 FPS. If your system is under strain this will markedly lower the stress on the CPU and will play more smoothly as a result. This can be done whilst playing live if you notice performance dropping in real-time. It is better to reduce the performance to 30 FPS than have intermittent frame dropping at 60FPS.
  • Complex scenes could be interspersed with more sparse content to give the CPU time to cool down.
